“I much appreciate the contribution of European Jewry who have always supported peace and understanding between nations, and I thank you for it”, declared the President of the European Union.

The delegation of Rabbonim included Rabbi Dovid Moshe Lieberman, Chief Rabbi of Shomrei Hadass in Antwerp; Rabbi Gershon Mendel Garelik, Rov of Milan; Rabbi Yirmiyah Menachem Cohen, Rov of Paris; Rabbi Yaakov Dovid Schmahl, Dayan in Antwerp; Rabbi Yitzchok Shochet, Rov of Mill Hill, London, UK; Rabbi Moshe Garelik, Director of the Rabbinical Centre of Europe; and Rabbi Levi Matosof, who is responsible for contact with the authorities.

The Rabbanim brought up several current topics in their discussion with the President, and requested his intervention in the struggle against rampant anti-Semitism in Europe.

At the close of the meeting, Rabbi Gershon Mendel Garelik presented the President of the European Union with a silver Menorah, and added, “The Jewish People have suffered and endured great darkness in Europe more than any other place in the world. Our task is to bring light and illuminate even the darkest corner”.
