Jewish Status Of Budapest Family To Be Decided By Proofs From Yad Vashem?
The question of the Jewish status of a Budapest family is awaiting a final decision.
The Dept. for Clarification of Jewish Status at the Rabbinical Centre of Europe received a request to clarify the status of a family which had been assumed to be Jewish for many years. However, when one family member applied to a European Jewish institution, he was asked to submit to further clarification of his status. In the process of the examination, several questions concerning the family’s status were raised.
The family appealed to Yad Vashem in Jerusalem to help them by revealing various documents which would prove their Jewish status. Those responsible for the case, who are making the inquiry, are doubtful if the family is Jewish, according to the documents provided.
As is usual in such instances, the case was given over to the decision of the Beth Din Mekor Chaim in Jerusalem, headed by Rabbi Avraham Dov Levine. At the Centre it is assumed that the decision will be made in the next few days, which is likely to have serious repercussions for the future of this Hungarian family.
